I still remember my childhood days of Kali Pujo and Diwali celebrations whenfireworks was nothing but a fearsome experience. The sound of chocolate bombs and kali patakas used to be deafening. One had to roll up the windows in cars lest a flying rocket might enter. People used to burst crackers on the road making it humanly impossible to traverse.
And now – what a sea change! such a lot of discipline in the city. I was so happy to see police petrolling in jeeps and bikes all over even at 3.45 am in the morning when I was coming back home. Alert notices and posters have been sent to housing complexes, the local police stations have been holding meetings with residents. The sound and definitely the nuisance have decreased a lot. Still there are criticisims that Kolkata Police have not been able to do much. I have a qustion to the critics – What do you all expect ? That for every unruly citizen there should be a police posted to check the nuisance of sound crackers ! There are so many unruly citizens who do not care for others and do not care for rules. They are the ones who need to be criticised. If we demand to make Kolkata a better city, it is we the citizens who should own up responsibility – we must abide rules and help the administration in their tryst to make Kolkata a better place.
I suppose it will be quite apt to relate this comment made by a friend who claimed to have come back to spend the Kali pujo in Kolkata after 10 good years. He said ( it was about 1 am in the morning ) – ‘ At this time at Bombay if we were sitting at a ditsnce of two feet, we would not have been able to hear each other. Kolkata doesn’t seem to be celebrating Diwali.’
I salute for the effort taken by Kolkata Police and thank you for making my present Kali pujo much more bearable than my childhood days.
I am an optimist and with that posetive attitude look forward in seeing you doing more good for our society. Thanks a lot.

The way Kolkata Police managed the traffic during the Durga Puja festival was not only impeccable in nature but worth to be followed by other metros of our country!!
Let us feel proud about our fellow citizens, our brothers and sisters in the Kolkata Police and not generalise the faults and misdeeds of a few fellow members of KP and go on a blame game forgetting our own responsibilities towards the society.
We convey our sincere Sarodiya Subhechha to Sri Gautam Mohan Chakraborty and all the members of Kolkata Police.

Sailendra Nath MannaContribution of Kolkata Police in our daily life cannot be expressed in words. They remain alert round the clock for serving the people of the city. Their sincerity and dedication for the service of nation is implausible. We often miss to appreciate and commend their sacrifice, which they deserve most. People always expect more from police, but our conscience never respond to co-operate them. We, the common people being part of this society forget that we should also have the sense of responsibility to take active part along with the police to serve our nation. How can we forget that the duty of police is meant for us, meant for the public utility? We should not forget that police also earnestly seek our assistance. Apart from performing their regular duties Kolkata Police has always shown keen interest in games and sports. Kolkata Police organizes Inter-School Football Tournament, Para Football Tournament which is popularly known as Kolkata Police Friendship Cup Tournament. All this types to tournament earned a lot of popularity among the common people. Kolkata Police has proved to be true friend of common people by making them participate in the process of Citizen Involvement in Policing.

Sabyasachi ChakrabortyIt is most heartening to know that Kolkata Police have decided to come up with a blog site that will enable the people of Kolkata to write directly to the force and learn more about the systems and workings of the policing system of Kolkata. We may get to know the history of our magnificent city in all its administrative details, as the policing system has always worked for the administration, for the benefit of the commoner. I personally request the police administration to reply to such queries from us.
Many are under the wrong impression that the Police works as the cane-wielding strict warden of our society, whose sole job is to punish the wrong-doer. The common man feels cowed down by the very sight of the man in white uniform. It has been the aim of the Kolkata Police Force to change the views of the common man. The police force in Kolkata has been nurturing the city and its people to build up trust and confidence for a number of years now. Some of us in Kolkata have seen and interacted with the police force to understand that. It is time now to let the people know. My heartiest good wishes. I congratulate all those who have initiated this.

Syed Mustafa SirajI was born in a village. The rustic savour of Durga Pujo was special. Since the last half a century I have being in Kolkata. The autumn also sets in Kolkata as it does in the villages, but the feelings become more overwhelming as the ringing festivity mood of the “Durga Pujo” season gradually approaches. The heart of Kolkata shines in its unusual glory, which sows the seeds of a new rhythm of realization in my life – just like my childhood days in the village. Kolkata is a mega city; about more than one crore population dwells in this city including its suburbs. Besides other religious groups, the Hindus are in majority in this city, their deity is goddess Durga. So the enthusiasm generated during this festive season must be very high. This is very good indication that people from other religions too waits for this festivity year long. Not only for economic reasons, in reality is the “Bengali Saradiya Pujo” a great festival. Everybody enjoys during this time of celebration.
Being a mega city, different types of people with diverse intention, from various states roam the lengths and breadths of this city. As a result the administration has a huge responsibility during this period. Puja revelers in huge numbers throng the city; the possibility of a major disaster looms large. Consequently, particularly in this period of time proper controlling of law and order situations becomes a priority for the police administration. For this reason the police administration chalks out a preparation with the organizers of the puja committees beforehand.
Truly speaking in this aspect, the police administration takes assistance from the different well-known intellectuals, renowned persons of the respective locality. In this context, for the last 30 years I was in close proximity to the endeavor of the police administration. My experience has been very much remarkable. There were numerous instances where I remained an adjudicator in respect of the grandiose and aesthetics of the pujas of East Kolkata. Almost the whole night I observed different idols of the goddess Durga in a police car, filled with emotion and excitement. Using this opportunity Kolkata has embraced a massive magnitude of folk culture from the whole country, which is the salient feature of the traditional inheritance of this Bengal. The quantum of role of the police administration directly involved in streamlining the cheerful stream of this enormous enthusiasm is truly noteworthy – I am its eyewitness. Whatever is dark under the glitterati of the festive season, and which demands silent watchful eyes of the police administration, before immersing into the true spirit of the Pujas of Bengal – I can’t help but thank them from the core of my heart. I also thank them for launching the blog for people will be able to participate in discussion through writing.

I would like to congratulate Kolkata Police on launching their website as well as their blog. I do believe that this initiative will ease accessibility and enhance transparency between the common man and the police force. Certain features on the website such as passport status, missing and traced vehicles and a section dedicated towards cyber crime should prove to be very useful. I wish Kolkata Police the very best for this endeavor.
